Bihar Government Announces Sweeping Ban on Meat and Fish Sales in Sensitive Areas
The Bihar government has taken a decisive step to prohibit the sale of meat and fish in proximity to educational institutions, places of worship, and crowded public spaces. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha made this significant announcement on Monday, highlighting substantial public health risks and concerns that such environments could potentially encourage violent behavior among children.
Universal Enforcement with No Exceptions
Authorities have specifically flagged shops operating near temples, mosques, schools, colleges, and other densely populated public areas, identifying them as clear breaches of existing regulations that threaten social harmony. The proposed meat and fish ban near these sensitive locations will be enforced universally, with absolutely no exceptions granted to vendors holding licenses.
"We respect individual food choices, but let's maintain social harmony and avoid hurting sentiments. No one's feelings should be offended and public health shouldn't be compromised with contaminated products," emphasized Sinha, who holds the urban development and housing portfolio.
Crackdown Already Underway
The enforcement crackdown has already commenced across the state. The urban development and housing department issued strict instructions on Sunday to all municipal bodies, directing them to take immediate action against illegal meat and fish shops operating without valid licenses.
According to the department's assessment, numerous such outlets are currently running in direct violation of the Bihar Municipal Act, often operating in open and unhygienic conditions that pose serious risks to:
- Sanitation standards
- Public health safety
- Law and order maintenance
Immediate Action and Compliance Requirements
Municipal bodies have received clear directives to immediately identify unlicensed outlets and take "decisive action" against them. Shops failing to meet prescribed hygiene norms are to be sealed without any delay whatsoever.
The government has established that future operations must strictly adhere to licensing conditions and hygiene regulations. Legal proceedings will be systematically initiated against all violators who fail to comply with these new requirements.
Comprehensive Inspection Drives Mandated
All municipal bodies across Bihar have been instructed to carry out thorough inspection drives, systematically shut down illegal outlets, and submit detailed compliance reports at the earliest possible opportunity.
