Bihar Prohibition Department Initiates Neera Licence Renewal Process
The Department of Prohibition, Excise, and Registration in Bihar has announced the commencement of issuing new licences and renewing existing ones for neera production under the Mukhyamantri Neera Samvardhan Yojana for the current year. This initiative, launched in 2025 to promote the state's neera industry, is set for full-scale implementation from April to July, as per a recent press release.
Regulatory Framework and Licensing Requirements
According to the Bihar Neera Rules, 2017, the extraction of neera is strictly regulated and permitted only for tapers registered with Jeevika Neera Producer Groups who hold valid licences. Since these permits require mandatory annual renewal, the department has instructed officials to coordinate closely with Jeevika district project managers to ensure that all existing licences are updated promptly and efficiently.
Streamlining Applications and Boosting Rural Economy
Authorities have also been directed to expedite the verification of new applications to bring more participants into the regulated fold. By streamlining these administrative procedures, the state government aims to maximise rural employment opportunities while establishing neera as a healthy, natural alternative beverage during the peak summer months. This move is expected to enhance the local economy and support sustainable agricultural practices.
Key Objectives of the Scheme:
- Promote neera as a nutritious drink alternative.
- Generate employment in rural areas through regulated production.
- Ensure compliance with state regulations for quality control.
The department's efforts focus on creating a robust framework that supports both existing producers and new entrants, fostering growth in Bihar's neera sector.
