Bihar Government Extends Deadline for Urban Local Body Committee Elections

The state government of Bihar has officially extended the deadline for the election of members to the empowered standing committees across all urban local bodies (ULBs). The new deadline is now set for April 25, moving from the previously scheduled date of April 20.

Announcement by Deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha

Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of the Urban Development and Housing Department (UDHD), Vijay Kumar Sinha, made this announcement on Saturday. He explained that the decision was taken after careful reconsideration to address various administrative and procedural requirements. The extension aims to facilitate better coordination at all levels of governance.

"The objective behind extending the timeline is to ensure that the election process is conducted in a transparent, impartial, and systematic manner across all municipal corporations, municipal councils, and nagar panchayats without any hurdles," Sinha stated.

Revised Timeline and Instructions

Originally, as per a departmental notification issued on April 2, 2026, the elections were planned to be held between April 15 and 20. With the revised deadline, the process will now span from April 15 to 25, providing additional time for a smooth and effective completion.

Sinha has directed all district magistrates to ensure that the election of committee members in their respective districts is mandatorily completed within this new timeframe. He emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order throughout the exercise, while strictly adhering to principles of transparency, impartiality, and prescribed rules.

Continuity of Guidelines and Expected Benefits

The deputy CM clarified that all other instructions and guidelines issued earlier will remain in force and must be followed without exception. "The extension is expected to provide adequate time for planning and coordination, enabling every urban local body in the state to conduct the process in a fair and efficient manner," he added.

This move is seen as a strategic step to enhance the electoral process, ensuring that all ULBs in Bihar can operate without disruptions and uphold democratic values in local governance.
