Bihar Government Considers Relief on Electricity Bill Interest Charges
Energy Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav stated on Thursday that the state government would consider waiving the compound interest charged on outstanding electricity bills. This announcement came during a call attention motion in the legislative assembly, as part of the ongoing budget session in Patna.
MLAs Voice Concerns Over Growing Dues
Several MLAs expressed deep concern over the escalating burden of unpaid electricity dues and the compounding interest charges that have been accumulating. In response, Minister Yadav acknowledged the financial strain caused by these surcharges and affirmed the government's commitment to providing meaningful relief to affected consumers.
However, the minister made a crucial clarification: consumers will still be required to pay the principal amount of their bills. "The government is sympathetically considering the interest charged on outstanding amounts," Yadav emphasized, highlighting a balanced approach to addressing the issue.
Chief Minister Endorses Firm Stance on Land Matters
An interesting scene unfolded during a discussion on an old case related to the revenue and land reforms department. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar thumped his desk in strong support of Deputy CM and Department Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha's response.
CPI(M) MLA Ajay Kumar had raised allegations of irregularities in an old land measurement case in Samastipur, demanding strict action against the officials involved. Minister Sinha replied firmly, stating that the government would not tolerate any negligence in land survey and measurement matters. The chief minister's desk-thumping visibly endorsed Sinha's uncompromising stance.
Sinha further assured the assembly that necessary action would be taken. Responding to a question from Barauli MLA Manjeet Singh, he added that land disputes would not be allowed to become a curse for future generations. The minister revealed that the land survey is progressing rapidly, with a target set to complete it within the next two years.
Lighter Moments and Serious Health Concerns
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's remark on RJD MLA Bhai Birendra's colourful attire created a lighter moment during the session. This occurred when the Maner MLA raised serious concerns over rising arsenic levels in water in his constituency. Birendra responded sarcastically, "You're the one who gave it. You forget it after giving it to your younger brother."
Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) Minister Sanjay Kumar Singh addressed the issue, stating that water in the area was tested on February 9 and the arsenic level was below the acceptable limit of 0.01 mg/L. However, MLA Virendra alleged that officials had provided incorrect information. "I live in the area and know that many people have developed health complications due to arsenic in water," he asserted.
Speaker Prem Kumar noted that Birendra appeared healthy and assured that the government would take care of the people's well-being.
Recognition for the Speaker
Lauriya MLA Vinay Bihari suggested that Speaker Prem Kumar should be awarded the Padma Shri, highlighting that he is the first leader in the country to win nine consecutive elections from an urban constituency. This remark added a note of appreciation to the day's proceedings.
The assembly session showcased a mix of serious policy discussions, firm governmental stances, and occasional lighter interactions, reflecting the dynamic nature of Bihar's legislative process.
