BJD MP Debashish Samantaray Sends Scathing Letter to Naveen Patnaik
BJD MP writes angry letter to Naveen Patnaik

Senior BJD Leader Rebels Against Party Leadership

In a dramatic development that has exposed deep fissures within the Biju Janata Dal, senior party leader and Rajya Sabha member Debashish Samantaray has written a strongly-worded letter to party president Naveen Patnaik, accusing the party of abandoning its core ideology and mistreating loyal workers.

The rebellion comes months after Samantaray was sidelined by the party for publicly questioning the BJD's stance on the Waqf Bill earlier this year. In his Tuesday communication, the senior leader expressed grave concerns about the direction the party has taken under its current leadership.

Allegations of Demeaning Treatment

Samantaray revealed that during a major organizational restructuring exercise conducted in May, veteran leaders like himself were strategically sidelined and given less significant positions. He was specifically appointed as in-charge of the senior citizen cell with a designation described as in the rank of vice-president.

The MP expressed strong objection to this appointment, stating he finds such bureaucratic designations demeaning and humiliating. He explicitly mentioned in his letter that he is unable to accept this responsibility given the manner in which it has been framed.

Roots of the Conflict

The current crisis traces back to April when Samantaray abstained from voting on the Waqf legislation, openly expressing his displeasure with the party's last-minute decision to change its stance. The BJD had initially promised to allow its members to vote according to their conscience in the Rajya Sabha but performed an unexpected U-turn at the final moment.

Samantaray has directly blamed VK Pandian, Patnaik's close aide and former bureaucrat, for this sudden policy reversal. He has also complained about being denied personal access to the party president despite repeated attempts to discuss critical party matters.

Analysis of Electoral Defeat

The senior leader didn't shy away from analyzing the BJD's disappointing performance in the 2024 general and assembly elections. He attributed the electoral setback to the increasing bureaucratic style of functioning within the party and the growing influence of Pandian in both party affairs and governance matters.

Samantaray pointed out that while wins and losses are natural in elections, the BJD's defeat was particularly noteworthy given the popularity of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. He claimed that the reasons for the defeat are well-known among party workers and supporters, yet the leadership has failed to acknowledge the reality or implement corrective measures.

Despite his strong criticism, Samantaray clarified that he has no immediate plans to leave the BJD as long as Patnaik remains at the helm. However, he made an emotional appeal to the party president to prevent attempts being made to weaken the regional outfit that has governed Odisha for 24 consecutive years.

The public airing of grievances by such a senior leader highlights the challenging phase the BJD is currently navigating, with internal dissent becoming increasingly visible and vocal.
