BJP Unveils Candidate List for Assam Assembly Elections
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday made a significant announcement by revealing its list of 88 candidates for the forthcoming Assam assembly elections. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to contest from his traditional and stronghold seat of Jalukbari, maintaining continuity in his political base. This strategic move comes as the party prepares for a crucial electoral battle in the northeastern state.
Seat Sharing and Alliance Dynamics
Under the newly finalized seat-sharing arrangement, the BJP will contest 89 seats in the 126-member Assam legislative assembly. Its alliance partners, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), will field candidates in 26 constituencies, while the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) will contest 11 seats. Notably, the name of the candidate from the Sissiborgaon constituency has been withheld, indicating ongoing deliberations or strategic considerations.
The BJP has demonstrated a mix of continuity and change in its candidate selection. The party has dropped 11 sitting Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), signaling a refresh in its lineup. Additionally, only five women candidates have been fielded, highlighting gender representation as an area of focus or critique.
Prominent Candidates and Political Shifts
Among the notable candidates, Pradyut Bordoloi, who recently resigned as a Congress Lok Sabha MP to join the BJP, has been nominated from the Dispur assembly constituency. This move underscores the BJP's strategy of attracting experienced politicians from rival parties to strengthen its electoral prospects.
Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary will contest from the Tamulpur (ST) seat, while Bhupen Borah, another leader who switched from the Congress to the BJP and previously served as the Congress Assam chief, has been fielded from Bihpuria. These inclusions reflect the BJP's efforts to consolidate support by incorporating influential figures from across the political spectrum.
Election Schedule and Political Context
The announcement follows the Election Commission's declaration of the poll schedule last week. Voting for the 126-member Assam assembly will be conducted in a single phase on April 9, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4. The BJP is aiming to retain power in the state, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seeking another term to continue his administration's policies and development agenda.
In the 2021 assembly elections, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), comprising the BJP, AGP, and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), secured 75 seats, with the BJP alone winning 60 seats. However, the current political landscape has seen shifts, with the UPPL leaving the NDA earlier, citing ideological differences.
NDA Consolidation and Opposition Strategy
In a bid to consolidate the NDA before the polls, the BJP recently brought the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) back into its fold after a five-year separation and finalized seat-sharing with the AGP. This realignment aims to present a united front against the opposition.
On the other side, the opposition Congress has already announced candidates for 65 constituencies as part of its alliance strategy. The campaign is being led by state chief and Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, setting the stage for a competitive electoral contest. The BJP's candidate list, with its blend of experienced incumbents and new faces, is poised to play a pivotal role in determining the outcome of the Assam assembly elections.
