Jaipur: With the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) under administrative rule and civic elections anticipated later this year, BJP councillors are devising a ward-wise outreach network to maintain connections with residents and tackle local issues. Under this proposal, party councillors will assume responsibility for all 150 wards following delimitation, serving as designated contact points for grievances. This initiative aims to sustain public engagement during the interim period while bolstering the party's grassroots presence.
Strengthening Grassroots Ties
A sitting councillor, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, "The move is aimed at maintaining public engagement during the interim period while strengthening BJP's grassroots presence. We will take up the issue with the leadership of the party's city unit." The strategy reflects a proactive approach to ensure that residents continue to have access to elected representatives despite the administrative setup.
Increased Complaints Under Administrative Rule
JMC (Greater) deputy mayor Puneet Karnawat noted a significant rise in complaints compared to his tenure in office, as residents persist in approaching elected representatives. "This is because under the administrative regime, people are still looking forward to elected representatives for solutions. Post-merger, the number of complaints increased. The problem is that you need leaders whom officials will listen to, even if he or she is no longer an elected representative. Under these circumstances, if the ruling party selects a list of sitting councillors, officials will take up their issues seriously," Karnawat explained.
Expanding Outreach to Opposition Wards
Party leaders believe this strategy will also help expand outreach in wards currently represented by Congress. Another councillor remarked, "With elections expected in seven to eight months, this can help us directly reach residents, even in wards that elected Congress councillors in 2021. This can be a good public outreach programme for us." The initiative is seen as a way to build rapport with constituents across all wards, regardless of political affiliation.
As the civic elections draw nearer, the BJP's ward-wise network could prove crucial in maintaining visibility and addressing local concerns, potentially influencing voter sentiment in the upcoming polls.
