Himachal Baglehar ZP election row deepens as BJP demands probe
BJP demands probe in Himachal Baglehar ZP election result row

The political controversy surrounding the Baglehar Zila Parishad election result in Solan district, Himachal Pradesh, has intensified as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded a thorough investigation into the counting process. The Congress candidate, Yogeshwar Rana, was declared victorious from Ward No. 17 by a margin of 71 votes, a result that the BJP has questioned.

BJP stages protest, seeks intervention

BJP leaders staged a protest outside the counting centre at Nalagarh late into the evening, demanding that the State Election Commission and the district administration intervene. The party has called for the preservation of all election records, a recount of votes, and an immediate inquiry into what it claims were discrepancies during the counting process.

Allegations of discrepancies

In a formal representation submitted to the District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner and the Returning Officer-cum-SDM, BJP candidate Jatinder Singh Rana outlined several alleged irregularities. He claimed that according to the tally maintained by his authorized counting agents, he had maintained a lead throughout the counting process and was ahead by nearly 200 votes at the end of the final round. However, the final result declared him defeated by 71 votes.

Rana further alleged that there was an unexplained delay of nearly an hour between the completion of counting and the declaration of results, which raised concerns about the transparency of the process. He also accused local MLA Hardeep Rana of influencing the outcome. The BJP candidate stated that election officials did not conduct a recount in a timely manner despite objections being raised, and that several counting agents were witnesses to the alleged discrepancies. He urged the State Election Commission to investigate the matter.

District administration rejects allegations

However, Deputy Commissioner Manmohan Sharma rejected the allegations and clarified the issues raised by the BJP candidate. He said that three specific issues had been raised: votes cast by polling personnel, recounting of rejected votes, and the table-wise tally of votes. The DC explained that 73 votes had been cast by election staff and around 200 votes had been rejected during counting. He added that the administration was not opposed to a recount, provided such a demand was made within the stipulated time frame prescribed under election rules.

Political debate ensues

With BJP leaders expressing dissatisfaction over the outcome, the controversy has sparked a political debate over the counting process. Election authorities have maintained that the result was declared in accordance with established procedures. The matter is now expected to be taken up by the State Election Commission for further review.
