Senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu are actively scouting for new constituencies to contest in the upcoming assembly election. This strategic repositioning is primarily driven by intricate caste calculations and the pursuit of stronger local support bases across the state.
Nainar Nagenthran Considers Move from Tirunelveli to Sattur
State BJP president Nainar Nagenthran, who previously secured a victory from the Tirunelveli constituency, is now weighing a potential shift to Sattur in the Virudhunagar district. According to internal party sources, this reconsideration is motivated by two critical factors.
Firstly, Sattur boasts a sizeable Thevar voter population, which the BJP aims to leverage. Secondly, there is a perceived increase in anti-BJP sentiment among minority voters in Tirunelveli, making the constituency less favorable. Additionally, the enhanced attention from the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tirunelveli, following Chief Minister M K Stalin's directive to prioritize the southern segment, has further prompted Nainar's rethink.
Besides Thevars, the Tirunelveli segment is demographically diverse, comprising significant numbers of Pillai, Nadar, Dalit, and Muslim voters, adding complexity to the electoral landscape.
K Annamalai Eyes Coimbatore After Lok Sabha Performance
Another prominent BJP leader, K Annamalai, who contested from Aravakurichi in Karur district during the 2021 assembly elections, has now turned his attention to Coimbatore. Annamalai contested from Coimbatore in the 2024 Lok Sabha election and garnered an impressive 4.5 lakh votes, demonstrating substantial voter support in the region.
This strong performance has positioned Coimbatore as a strategic choice for the upcoming assembly polls, with the party aiming to capitalize on his established rapport with the electorate.
Vanathi Srinivasan and Tamilisai Soundararajan Adjust Their Bases
Meanwhile, Vanathi Srinivasan, who won from Coimbatore South in the previous assembly election, is likely to contest from the neighbouring Coimbatore North seat this time. This move is part of the BJP's broader strategy to optimize candidate placement based on local dynamics and voter alignment.
In a similar strategic shift, Tamilisai Soundararajan, who contested from Virugambakkam in the last assembly polls, has redirected her focus to Mylapore. This change comes after her preferred T Nagar seat was sought by AIADMK district secretary B Sathyanarayanan.
The BJP has since appointed Tamilisai as the campaign in-charge for Mylapore, where she has already commenced groundwork. Her efforts are specifically targeting the constituency's key vote blocs, including Nadar, Vanniyar, and Brahmin communities. Party leaders highlight that the BJP secured nearly one-third of the vote share in this area during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, a key factor driving this strategic relocation.
Pon Radhakrishnan Prepares for Return to Assembly Politics
In the southern region of Tamil Nadu, former Union minister Pon Radhakrishnan is preparing to return to assembly politics after nearly a decade. He is eyeing the Nagercoil constituency, which has a significant Nadar population. This move aligns with the BJP's focus on caste-based electoral strategies to strengthen its presence in the state.
