BJP Leaders Court Lingayat Votes in Davanagere By-Election Strategy Meeting
BJP Leaders Seek Lingayat Support in Davanagere By-Election

BJP Leaders Intensify Outreach to Veerashaiva-Lingayat Community Ahead of Davanagere By-Election

In a significant political development, a crucial meeting was convened by the influential Veerashaiva-Lingayat community at the Davangere-Harihar Urban Bank Community Hall on Saturday. The gathering served as a strategic platform for prominent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functionaries to actively court Lingayat votes in preparation for the impending by-election in the region.

High-Profile Appeals for BJP Candidate Support

Union Minister V Somanna, alongside MLAs Aravind Bellad, CC Patil, and BP Harish, as well as former minister Murugesh Nirani, made impassioned appeals to the community members. They collectively urged the electorate to cast their ballots in favor of BJP candidate Srinivas Daskariyappa, emphasizing his potential and the broader political stakes.

Somanna highlighted Srinivas's prospects, stating, "Srinivas is a young man with a promising future. I recall visiting JH Patel's residence to deliberate on the establishment of Davanagere as a district. Both Patel and H Shivappa dedicated immense effort toward this cause." He underscored the community's substantial size and the unexpected nature of the by-election, noting the uncertainty of minority support.

Strategic Political Messaging and Criticisms

The Union Minister framed the election as a pivotal moment for the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community to assert their self-respect. "This presents a significant opportunity for them to demonstrate their self-respect. Rather than opposing minister Mallikarjun's family, our focus should be on combating Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's misrule. The community should extend their blessings to the BJP candidate," Somanna asserted.

MLA Aravind Bellad addressed the unforeseen by-election, calling for introspection. "We must reflect deeply. In the 2023 election, all communities bestowed their blessings upon the Congress, enabling them to form a government with 136 seats. However, corruption has become rampant under this administration. What tangible achievements have they delivered? It was Basavaraj Bommai, during his tenure as Chief Minister, who enhanced reservations for our community," he remarked, contrasting the BJP's past actions with the current government's performance.

Broader Implications for Karnataka Politics

This meeting underscores the BJP's concerted efforts to consolidate support among the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community, a key demographic in Karnataka's political landscape. The appeals focused on leveraging community pride, historical contributions, and dissatisfaction with the incumbent Congress government's governance. The by-election is poised to be a critical test of political alignments and community loyalty, with outcomes potentially influencing future electoral strategies in the state.
