BJP MLA Issues Ultimatum for Aarey Metro Station Bridge Opening in Mumbai
In a significant development for Mumbai's infrastructure, BJP MLA from Kandivli (East) Atul Bhatkalkar has demanded that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) open the Aarey Metro station access bridge on Western Express Highway within the next 15 to 20 days. The legislator has threatened to escalate the matter to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly during the upcoming monsoon session if the bridge remains closed.
Site Inspection and Official Response
Bhatkalkar conducted a site visit with MMRDA officials on Thursday, where he emphasized that the bridge has been completed for a considerable period. "The infrastructure is ready, and there is no justification for further delays," stated Bhatkalkar during the inspection. He expressed frustration over the prolonged closure, highlighting the inconvenience faced by daily commuters.
MMRDA officials responded by explaining that they are currently awaiting a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the fire department. "We are in the final stages of obtaining the necessary clearance and expect to receive it shortly," assured an MMRDA representative. The authority confirmed that once the NOC is secured, the bridge will be opened to the public without additional delay.
Additional Infrastructure Concerns Raised
During his visit, Bhatkalkar also raised concerns about the absence of an escalator on the east side of the Aarey Metro station. This missing facility forces commuters to navigate a cumbersome route:
- Use the foot overbridge (FOB) constructed by MSRDC to cross Western Express Highway
- Descend from the FOB
- Cross the road at ground level
- Access the escalator on the west side to enter the Metro station
"This circuitous path creates unnecessary hardship for passengers, particularly senior citizens and those with mobility challenges," Bhatkalkar emphasized. He urged MMRDA to address this infrastructure gap alongside the bridge opening to ensure seamless connectivity for all Metro users.
