The incident unfolded on Saturday when Ananta Roy was addressing a public meeting at Adabari in the Dinhata area of Cooch Behar district. During his speech, the MP made a series of statements that quickly gained traction on social media after clips went viral.
Roy explicitly stated, "The Union home minister has ordered detention camps." He elaborated that individuals whose names might be deleted from official lists would be housed in these facilities. He then posed a pointed question to the audience, many of whom belong to communities with historical migration backgrounds, asking, "Then they will ask you to prove your origin. We have been living here. Why should we prove?"
Further intensifying the debate, Roy also suggested that central government social welfare schemes could be frozen for those who are disenfranchised, referring to voters who might lose their political rights.
BJP's Swift Reaction and Distancing
Facing immediate backlash, the state leadership of the BJP moved quickly to dissociate the party from the MP's views. On Sunday, the party's West Bengal chief, Samik Bhattacharya, responded cautiously to the developing situation.
Bhattacharya told reporters, "I don't know in what context he said it. I don't know what prompted him to think like that." He indicated that the party's central leadership would review the comments and take an appropriate decision, effectively passing the matter to higher authorities in Delhi.
Political Fallout and Opposition Attack
The remarks provided immediate ammunition to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Bengal. Girindranath Barman, the TMC chairperson for Cooch Behar, seized the opportunity to target the BJP's top leadership.
Barman asserted, "Since Roy is a BJP MP, it is the PM's responsibility to see how he would handle this." This statement directly challenges Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to clarify the party's and the government's official stance on the sensitive issues of detention camps and citizenship verification, which are particularly volatile in Bengal.
