The liquor debate in Jammu and Kashmir has escalated into a major political controversy after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers staged a protest outside Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's residence in Srinagar, demanding a complete ban on alcohol in the Kashmir Valley. The protest marks a significant escalation in the ongoing dispute over the state's liquor policy.
BJP's Demand for Prohibition
BJP leaders and supporters gathered outside the chief minister's official residence, raising slogans and holding placards calling for an immediate prohibition on the sale and consumption of alcohol in the region. The party has accused the National Conference (NC) government of promoting alcohol consumption and undermining the cultural and religious sentiments of the people of Kashmir.
Senior BJP leader and former deputy chief minister, Kavinder Gupta, stated that the party would not rest until a complete ban is implemented. "Alcohol is destroying the youth of Kashmir, and the government is complicit in this by allowing its sale. We will continue our protests across the valley until the government heeds our demand," he said.
National Conference Defends Policy
In response, the National Conference government has defended its stance on the liquor policy. Party president Farooq Abdullah cited revenue concerns and historical precedent against prohibition. "We understand the cultural sensitivities, but a blanket ban is not feasible. The revenue generated from alcohol sales is crucial for the state's economy, and we have to balance various factors," he said.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also addressed the issue, stating that the government is committed to regulating alcohol consumption rather than imposing a total ban. "Prohibition has been tried in the past and has failed. It leads to illegal smuggling and black markets. Our focus is on responsible consumption and ensuring that alcohol does not reach the youth," he added.
Political Fallout and Future Protests
The BJP has warned of larger protests across Kashmir if the government does not reverse its policy. The party plans to organize demonstrations in all major towns and cities of the valley, putting pressure on the NC-led coalition. The issue has also sparked debates in the state assembly, with opposition members demanding a discussion on the matter.
Meanwhile, civil society groups have expressed mixed reactions. Some support the BJP's demand for a ban, citing religious and social reasons, while others argue that prohibition would lead to increased illegal activities and loss of revenue.
