Nagpur: As the seat-sharing deadlock within the Mahayuti alliance persists, Bharatiya Janata Party functionaries in the Vidarbha region have begun advocating for an aggressive electoral strategy ahead of the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections. District-level party workers have communicated a clear message to the party leadership in Nagpur, emphasizing that the BJP should not be caught off guard by last-minute seat-sharing demands from alliance partners.
Party Insiders Reveal Internal Pressure
According to party insiders who spoke to TOI, leaders across Vidarbha are pressing the BJP to contest from a position of strength in constituencies where the party enjoys a numerical advantage through local bodies and organizational presence. The concern within sections of the BJP is that the Shiv Sena, led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, is attempting to expand its footprint in Vidarbha and may try to bargain for seats in the council polls, particularly in constituencies where the BJP has traditionally dominated local authority politics.
BJP's Stronghold in Vidarbha
Senior BJP functionaries noted that the party's strength in municipal corporations, zilla parishads, and other local bodies gives it a clear advantage in most Vidarbha constituencies. However, they admitted there is nervousness about friendly competition within the ruling alliance. A BJP functionary from Vidarbha stated that local units do not want a repeat of situations where prolonged negotiations weaken cadre morale. "The feeling in the organization is that Vidarbha is the BJP's strongest region, and the party should approach these elections with confidence instead of defensive calculations," the leader said.
Focus on Nagpur Local Authorities' Constituency Byelection
The immediate focus is on the Nagpur Local Authorities' Constituency bypoll, necessitated after Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule vacated the MLC seat following his election to the Legislative Assembly in 2024. The seat term runs only until January 1, 2028, and the shorter tenure has sparked internal discussions over candidate selection and future political positioning.
Other Constituencies Up for Election
Apart from Nagpur, biennial elections will also be held for the Bhandara-cum-Gondia, Wardha-cum-Chandrapur-cum-Gadchiroli, Yavatmal, and Amravati constituencies in Vidarbha. Party leaders believe these polls will serve as an indicator of political influence at the grassroots level ahead of the next round of local body elections.
Election Schedule and Party Preparations
Polling is scheduled for June 18, and counting will take place on June 22. Nominations close on June 1, and the last date for withdrawal is June 4. The BJP has stated that consultations with district units are already underway, and the party is expected to finalize names after receiving internal feedback from the region.
