The Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a high-level investigation by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) following the tragic death of a schoolboy in Tiruvallur district. The party has also demanded criminal proceedings against government officials it holds responsible for the incident.
Demand for Accountability and Probe
On Wednesday, the state BJP intensified its pressure on the authorities over the fatal accident. The incident involved the collapse of a wall at a government school, which led to the death of Rohit, a Class XII student belonging to the Scheduled Caste community. Party spokesman ANR Prasad squarely placed the blame on administrative failure, gross inefficiency, and criminal negligence by officials tasked with maintaining school infrastructure.
The BJP asserted that this was not an isolated event but part of a disturbing pattern of infrastructure failures in state-run schools. The party pointed to systemic issues including critical gaps in funding for repairs, inordinate delays in renovation work, and a complete absence of regular safety inspections. This neglect, they argued, has created hazardous environments for students.
A Pattern of Negligence in School Safety
To underscore its claim of a systemic problem, the BJP cited two previous similar incidents. The first occurred on December 3, 2025, when a compound wall collapsed at the Anjur Government Higher Secondary School in Chengalpet district. The second took place in October 2024, involving a balcony wall collapse at the Old Ayakudi Government Primary School in Pazhani, located in Dindigul district.
While these earlier incidents fortunately did not result in any fatalities, Prasad emphasized that they should have served as a major warning sign. "These near-misses should have triggered an immediate and comprehensive statewide safety audit of all rural schools," the BJP spokesperson stated. The failure to act on these red flags, according to the party, directly contributed to the preventable tragedy in Tiruvallur.
Calls for Systemic Reform and Justice
The BJP's demands extend beyond a probe into the single incident. The party is pushing for a broader reckoning to prevent such tragedies in the future. They are seeking criminal action against the officials whose alleged negligence led to the wall's collapse and the student's death.
The core of the party's argument is that the state government has consistently failed in its duty to provide safe learning environments, particularly in rural areas. The call for an NCSC investigation highlights the victim's identity as a Scheduled Caste student, framing the incident within the context of social justice and the state's duty of care towards marginalized communities.
