BJP Launches Sharp Attack on Congress Over Women's Reservation Bill Opposition

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) escalated its political offensive on Saturday, strongly accusing the Congress party of undermining women's rights by opposing the proposed Women's Reservation Bill. This landmark legislation aims to ensure 33% representation for women in legislatures across India.

Minister Bawankule Labels Congress Stance as 'Insult to Women'

Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule described the bill as 'historic' and central to India's long-term development objectives. "The decision to grant 33% reservation to women is absolutely vital for achieving a developed India by 2047," he asserted. "By opposing this crucial bill, Congress has directly insulted women across the nation." Bawankule added that celebrations by Congress members following resistance to the measure amounted to 'an attack on the dignity of women.'

The minister alleged that Congress has consistently opposed similar initiatives since 1996, thereby systematically denying political representation to millions of Indian women. "This is not merely a political issue but fundamentally a matter of women's respect and empowerment," he emphasized. "Women voters will certainly take careful note of this opposition in the coming elections."

State BJP President Warns of Electoral Consequences

Echoing this severe criticism, state BJP president Ravindra Chavan termed Congress's opposition as a 'grave mistake' with significant electoral implications. "The Congress has committed a serious error by opposing a bill specifically aimed at empowering women politically," he stated during a party event in Akola. "The people of India will not forgive this regressive stance." The event was part of a broader BJP outreach initiative across Maharashtra.

Questions Raised About Congress Consistency

In Nagpur, BJP MLA Krishna Khopde questioned the conspicuous silence of regional Congress leaders, alleging glaring inconsistency in the party's public stance. "The Congress party, which repeatedly claims credit for advocating women's reservation, has now openly opposed it in Parliament," he pointed out. "This contradictory position has thoroughly exposed their true face to the electorate." Khopde further noted that even women Members of Parliament from the Congress party had resisted the proposal.

BJP Plans Further Action and Broader Framing

BJP sources indicated that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis would address the media on Sunday at 12 noon regarding the issue of delimitation alongside senior party office-bearers. This move followed the party's directive to all its units across Maharashtra to strongly criticize Congress and other opposition parties for defeating the women's reservation bill.

The BJP also sought to frame the legislation as socially inclusive beyond gender representation. Bawankule argued that the bill could significantly expand political opportunities for Other Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes, accusing the opposition of deliberately misleading the public about its broader implications.

Minister Calls for Restraint on Sensitive Issues

Beyond the intense political exchange, Minister Bawankule urged restraint regarding sensitive ongoing matters, including criminal investigations. "It is always appropriate to wait for final investigative reports rather than engage in premature speculation," he stressed. The minister also flagged pressing concerns over water scarcity in the region, calling for an immediate 50% reduction in water usage amid significantly below-average rainfall patterns.
