The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has swept the Gujarat civic polls, winning a majority of seats across municipal corporations, municipalities, and panchayats. The elections, covering nearly 9,200 seats and over 4.18 crore voters, are seen as a major test ahead of next year's assembly elections. While the BJP celebrates its victory, opposition parties have reasons to worry about their performance in both urban and rural areas.
Massive Polling Exercise Across Gujarat
Local body elections spanned municipal corporations, municipalities, district and taluka panchayats, covering nearly 9,200 seats and over 4.18 crore voters, making it one of the largest electoral exercises in the state ahead of next year's assembly polls.
Counting Begins Early Across Centres
Counting of votes began at 9 am on Tuesday under the supervision of the State Election Commission, with results from multiple civic bodies declared through the day as trends firmed up across districts.
Polling Held Peacefully Across State
Voting for the local body polls was conducted largely without major incidents, with authorities ensuring security arrangements and smooth conduct across urban and rural regions.
Urban Turnout Remains Moderate
Voter participation in urban areas remained relatively subdued, with municipal corporations recording turnout around the 50% mark, continuing the pattern of lower engagement in city-based civic elections.
Higher Participation Beyond Cities
Turnout was stronger in municipalities and rural bodies, reflecting higher voter engagement outside major urban centres and indicating robust grassroots participation in local governance polls.
SEC Data Shows Turnout Spread
According to official figures, turnout stood at 55.1% in municipal corporations, 65.53% in municipalities, 66.64% in district panchayats and 67.26% in taluka panchayats.
BJP Strong Position in Multi-Cornered Contests
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), along with smaller parties, contested across regions, with BJP maintaining an edge in several key constituencies.
New Civic Bodies Go to Polls
Elections were also held in newly formed municipal corporations, marking their first electoral test and expanding the scope of urban governance in the state.
Multi-Tier Polls Across Gujarat
The elections covered 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats and 260 taluka panchayats, underlining the scale and complexity of the multi-level local governance system.
Key Political Test Ahead of Assembly Polls
The civic polls are being closely watched as an indicator of political trends ahead of the Gujarat assembly elections, with parties assessing their grassroots strength based on the outcomes.
