Ahmedabad: Following the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) resounding victory in the 2026 Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, attention has turned to the upcoming general board meeting scheduled for Tuesday. During this meeting, the city will elect its new mayor, deputy mayor, and standing committee chairman.
BJP's Dominant Performance
The BJP secured a commanding win by capturing 160 out of 192 seats across 48 wards in the AMC polls. This marks the party's fifth consecutive victory in the civic body, reinforcing its stronghold in the city.
Mayoral Race Heats Up
The mayor's post is reserved for a male candidate from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category for the next two and a half years. This reservation has triggered intense lobbying within the party. Among the leading contenders are Hitesh Barot, corporator from Thaltej ward and former chairman of the standing committee, and Dharamshi Desai from Bodakdev ward. Other candidates in the fray include Jashubhai Thakor from Shahibaug ward and Rajesh Thakor from Vejalpur ward.
Deputy Mayor and Standing Committee
A woman corporator is likely to be chosen as the deputy mayor, reflecting the party's commitment to gender representation. Meanwhile, 21 BJP corporators have filed nominations for the standing committee, from which 12 members will be selected. The remaining nine candidates are expected to withdraw their nominations to streamline the process.
Key Contenders for Standing Committee Chairman
Several prominent corporators are in the running for the standing committee chairman's post. Frontrunners include Jainik Vakil from Paldi ward, Ketan Patel from Gota ward, Pravin Patel from Ghatlodia ward, Rakesh Parikh from Stadium ward, and Paresh Lakhani from Nikol ward.
This election is crucial for the BJP as it will shape the leadership of the AMC for the coming years, influencing key decisions on urban development, infrastructure, and public services in Ahmedabad.
