Booth Capturing Alleged in Mohali Civic Polls, Police Deny Charge
The civic body elections in Mohali saw allegations of booth capturing from opposition parties, but the police have categorically denied any such incident. The opposition claimed that their polling agents were forcibly removed from several booths, and that fake voting took place. However, the Mohali police stated that no complaints were filed regarding booth capturing and that the voting process was peaceful.
Opposition's Allegations
Opposition leaders, including those from the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, alleged that their agents were manhandled and thrown out of polling stations. They claimed that this allowed ruling party workers to indulge in bogus voting. The opposition demanded a re-poll in the affected booths.
Police Response
Senior police officials said that they had deployed adequate security and that no untoward incident was reported. They added that the elections were conducted smoothly and that the opposition's claims were baseless. The police also said that they are ready to investigate any specific complaints, but none were received.
Election Commission's Stand
The Election Commission officials stated that they are monitoring the situation and will take action if any evidence of malpractice emerges. They urged all parties to provide proof of their allegations.
The voting for the Mohali civic body elections took place on a peaceful note, with a voter turnout of around 60 percent. The counting of votes will take place on a later date.
