Dahod District Panchayat Candidate's Triple-Party Nomination Creates Confusion
In a bizarre electoral development in Gujarat's Dahod district, a candidate for the district panchayat seat submitted nomination forms with mandates from three different political parties, sparking confusion among election officials. Bharatsinh Vakhala, who is contesting for the Pipero assembly seat, had his nominations filed with support letters from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Indian National Congress, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Candidate Claims Unawareness of Multiple Mandates
Vakhala, who appeared for the scrutiny of nomination forms on Monday, stated that he was not aware that two of the mandates had been submitted for his nomination. He told mediapersons that he only learned about the situation from journalists two days prior and saw the documents during the official scrutiny process. "I have decided to contest from the BJP and have submitted this in writing today," Vakhala declared, clarifying his political allegiance.
This clarification came after the election officials were baffled by the submission of three separate forms, each bearing a mandate from a different major party. Vakhala has a history of switching parties in previous elections, having contested the Devgadh Baria assembly constituency in 2017 on a Congress ticket and in 2022 from AAP, losing both times to BJP heavyweight and former minister Bachu Khabad.
Political Implications and Background
The Congress party has alternative candidates for the seat, but Vakhala's nomination was the only one filed with an AAP mandate. Sources indicate that Vakhala is considered a political heavyweight in the Devgadh Baria area and has been actively challenging Khabad's dominance for some time. His decision to contest from the BJP is viewed as a strategic move, suggesting that the party might be exploring alternatives in Devgadh Baria.
This shift comes in the wake of a major embarrassment for the BJP, as Khabad's sons were implicated in the MNREGA scam in the district. The scandal has caused significant political fallout, potentially influencing the party's candidate selection process. The triple-party nomination incident highlights the complex and often unpredictable nature of local politics in Gujarat.
Election officials are now reviewing the validity of the nominations, while political analysts speculate on the broader implications for the upcoming panchayat elections. The case underscores the importance of transparency and due diligence in the electoral nomination process to prevent such confusions in the future.
