Maharashtra Government Requests CBI Investigation into Fatal Plane Crash
In a significant development, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed on Sunday that the state government has formally requested a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar last month. The announcement came during a press briefing where Fadnavis addressed growing concerns about the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
Formal Request Submitted to Union Home Ministry
"We have received a formal letter from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) specifically requesting a CBI inquiry into this matter," stated Chief Minister Fadnavis. "In response to this request, we have officially written to the Union Home Ministry, and the case will now be investigated by the CBI." This central agency investigation will proceed concurrently with ongoing probes being conducted by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Addressing Public Concerns and Valid Doubts
The Chief Minister emphasized the government's commitment to transparency in this investigation. "Those who have legitimate doubts or concerns about the crash should formally write to the appropriate investigating authority," Fadnavis advised. "Alternatively, they can submit their concerns to the government, and we will ensure they are forwarded to the relevant authority for proper consideration." He further assured that "all valid doubts must be answered comprehensively, and we shall pursue this matter diligently until satisfactory answers are received by all stakeholders."
Comprehensive Safety Audit and Technical Investigation
In addition to the criminal investigation, Fadnavis revealed that a comprehensive safety audit of all flights operated by VSR, the company that owned the ill-fated aircraft, has already been initiated. The Chief Minister shared a personal connection to the tragedy, disclosing that he had flown in the same aircraft that crashed on four or five previous occasions.
Regarding the technical investigation, Fadnavis explained that due to overheating issues with the flight data recorder, specialized assistance has been sought from the aircraft manufacturer to retrieve crucial information from the cockpit voice recorder. This technical recovery process is essential for understanding the final moments before the crash and determining potential contributing factors.
The multi-agency approach involving the CBI, DGCA, and state CID represents a comprehensive effort to investigate both potential criminal negligence and aviation safety violations. This tragic incident has raised significant questions about aviation safety protocols and oversight mechanisms for chartered flights in Maharashtra.
