Chennai Residents Rally for Infrastructure Upgrades Ahead of Crucial Elections
In the bustling neighborhood of Kasturba Nagar in Adyar, Chennai, a coalition of approximately 5,000 residents has mobilized to present a comprehensive list of demands to political candidates ahead of the upcoming elections. Their primary focus centers on critical infrastructure improvements that have long plagued daily life in the area.
Encroachments and Commuting Woes Top the List of Concerns
The most pressing issue highlighted by residents is the severe encroachment along Canal Bank Road and the stretch between Kamaraj Avenue 1st Street and Old Mahabalipuram Road. Despite a 2022 Madras High Court order mandating the removal of these encroachments, little progress has been made. D Radhakrishnan, a resident of 4th Main Road, explained, "Most of the encroachments have evolved into permanent houses. Additionally, numerous eateries have sprung up, leading to parked two-wheelers that drastically reduce road space for pedestrians." The situation is further exacerbated by the presence of a Tasmac outlet on this stretch, compounding traffic and safety concerns.
Demands for Essential Utility Upgrades
Beyond road issues, residents are calling for urgent upgrades to essential utilities. Key demands include:
- Replacement of a damaged transformer on 8th Main Road, which is responsible for frequent power outages disrupting daily activities.
- Installation of new CCTV cameras and streetlights to enhance security and visibility in the neighborhood.
- Widening of Canal Bank Road to alleviate traffic congestion and improve mobility.
D Balaji, vice-president of the Kasturba Nagar South Residents Welfare Association, stated, "We have compiled a detailed list of these demands and plan to formally submit them to all candidates contesting in this election to ensure our voices are heard."
Broader Community Support and Aging Sewer Systems
The sentiment for infrastructure improvements resonates beyond Kasturba Nagar, with residents in neighboring areas like Gandhi Nagar and Indira Nagar expressing similar concerns. A common demand across these communities is the replacement of sewer pipelines that were laid over 30 years ago. K Adithya, a resident of Indira Nagar, highlighted the issue, noting, "Originally, most residences were independent homes. Now, many have been converted into flats, housing up to four times the number of residents. The aging pipelines simply cannot handle the increased load, leading to frequent problems."
This collective action underscores a growing frustration among Chennai residents with long-neglected infrastructure, positioning these demands as a pivotal issue in the upcoming electoral landscape.
