Tragic Incident in Gummidipoondi Claims Life of Teenager
In a heartbreaking turn of events, an 18-year-old boy lost his life in Gummidipoondi, Chennai, on Wednesday morning after attempting to save his mother from a suicide attempt. The mother, identified as Noori, aged 50, is currently undergoing intensive treatment at a hospital for severe burn injuries affecting her hands and legs.
Financial Distress Leads to Desperate Act
Noori, a resident of Gururaja Kandigai near Kavarapettai, had been grappling with significant financial hardship for several months. According to neighbours, she appeared deeply distressed after suffering losses in a chit fund scheme. To mitigate these losses, she borrowed money from multiple sources but found herself unable to repay the mounting debts, which exacerbated her mental anguish.
Fatal Night Unfolds at Home
On Tuesday night, while at home with her son Amanullah, an 18-year-old student attending a religious school near Avadi, Noori attempted to take her own life. She poured kerosene over herself and set herself ablaze in a moment of despair. Amanullah, witnessing this horrific act, rushed to intervene and stop his mother. In the chaos, the kerosene spilled onto him as well, resulting in both individuals sustaining severe burns.
Neighbours quickly responded to the emergency, transporting Noori and Amanullah to the Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital for urgent medical care. Despite efforts to save him, Amanullah, who suffered from 80% burns, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning. Noori remains hospitalized with 60% burns and is receiving ongoing treatment.
