Infrastructure Deficiencies Amplify Risks

The junction, situated merely 200 meters from the Tambaram corporation limits, currently operates without a functional traffic signal or a roundabout. This critical absence forces motorists into precarious maneuvers when attempting U-turns or crossing the road. "The lack of basic traffic control measures has transformed this stretch into a dangerous corridor," explained Vignesh, a Mappedu resident who witnesses the chaos daily.

The 9.3-kilometer Tambaram Eastern Bypass was specifically designed to alleviate congestion in the region, serving as a popular alternative for travelers moving between Velachery and Perungalathur. By diverting near Camp Road junction, drivers can bypass the notoriously busy Tambaram town stretch and connect directly to GST Road. Traffic estimates suggest at least 1,000 vehicles utilize this bypass hourly to access GST Road.

However, ongoing construction continues to impact traffic flow. While the section from Madambakkam to the Vandalur forest area has been completed as a six-lane road, other segments remain under development. Currently, underground drainage work along the stretch up to Thiruvanchery has reduced the available road width. Barricades installed near Mappedu junction have further constricted space for vehicle movement.

The combination of infrastructure gaps and construction barriers creates particularly hazardous conditions.
