Youths Torch Churachandpur CEO Office in Protest Over Transfer Order
In a dramatic escalation of tensions, unidentified youths forcibly shut down the executive officer's town office under the chief executive officer (CEO)/Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) in Churachandpur, Manipur, on Tuesday afternoon. The incident, which occurred between approximately 2 pm and 3 pm, saw the office furniture set ablaze after staff were evacuated.
Protest Against Government Transfer Decision
This act of arson follows a statement issued on Monday by three prominent student organizations: the Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), Zomi Students' Federation (ZSF), and Hmar Students' Association (HSA). The groups vehemently opposed the Manipur government's transfer order of Lalthajam MCS, the CEO/ADC of Churachandpur, issued on March 28.
The student bodies argued that the transfer was executed without consulting local stakeholders, exacerbating unresolved pressing issues in the district. They have urgently appealed to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh to retain Lalthajam MCS in his position.
Allegations of Disregard and Political Motives
In their statement, the organizations questioned why Churachandpur's CEO was singled out for transfer while no other district CEOs faced similar actions. They alleged that this move reflects a blatant disregard for the wishes of the local populace and aligns with certain MLAs who oppose the formation of a popular government in the region.
The protest highlights growing discontent over administrative decisions perceived as undermining community representation and governance transparency.
New Appointment Amidst Unrest
Amidst this turmoil, Shokhongam Baite MCS assumed charge as the newly appointed CEO/ADC of Churachandpur on Tuesday. The transition occurs against a backdrop of heightened public dissent and calls for greater involvement in key administrative changes affecting the district.
This incident underscores the volatile political and social climate in Manipur, where student-led movements continue to challenge government policies they view as exclusionary or unjust.
