Councillor's Formal Request for Protective Measures
Chitra Vellingiri, the councillor of ward 26, took official action by writing to the corporation commissioner on Tuesday. She urged the civic body to erect green nets at key junctions across the city. "The temperature is becoming unbearable, especially for motorists," Chitra emphasized in her communication.
She pointed out that over the last two years, the corporation had temporarily installed green nets at several locations, including:
- Town Hall junction
- Saravanampatti junction
- Sundarapuram junction
- Sanganoor junction
"Motorists have to wait in the scorching sun because there is no natural canopy," Chitra added, stressing the urgent need for protective infrastructure.
Motorists Express Frustration Over Lack of Facilities
N Sivakumar, an employee at a private finance company, shared his firsthand experience. "Waiting at the signals without any shelter drains out the energy," he stated. For field workers like him, temporary shade provides crucial relief during signal stops.
Sivakumar also noted the absence of previous amenities: "Earlier, there used to be free buttermilk spots. But this summer, none of these facilities have been made." This discontinuation has compounded the discomfort for daily commuters.
Corporation's Response and Election Code Hurdles
A corporation official confirmed receiving the councillor's request but indicated potential delays. "The execution is doubtful due to the election model code of conduct in place," the official explained. However, they assured that "action will be taken to ensure public safety" once feasible.
