In a dramatic turn of events in Sonipat, Congress candidate Kamal Diwan has reversed his decision and is now set to contest the mayoral election, days after announcing he would withdraw from the race. The development has intensified political activity in the city, with Diwan now poised to take on BJP's Rajiv Jain.
Background of the Reversal
Earlier this week, Rohtak MP Deepender Singh Hooda visited Sonipat and facilitated Diwan's nomination filing. The next day, Diwan declared he would not contest the election, triggering confusion and speculation within political circles. During this period, he reportedly remained inaccessible, not responding to calls from senior party leaders.
Party Intervention
The Congress leadership swiftly moved to contain the situation. Diwan was persuaded after a meeting in Ambala with Haryana Congress chief Uday Bhan and MP Deepender Hooda. Following the meeting, he agreed to return to the fray.
Councillor List and Ticket Disputes
Meanwhile, the Congress released its first list of councillor candidates, dropping names like Sanjay Tonk (Ward 18) and sitting councillor and deputy mayor Manjeet Gehlawat (Ward 19). Sources indicate Diwan had raised objections over ticket distribution, and at least four wards remain on hold.
Diwan's Statement
Addressing a press conference after returning to Sonipat, Diwan dismissed reports of his withdrawal as "rumours spread by the BJP," reaffirming his commitment to contest the election. The political landscape in Sonipat remains charged as the mayoral race heats up.
