Congress Minister Predicts Decisive Victory in Bagalkot Byelection
Public Works Minister Satish Jarakiholi on Thursday expressed strong confidence that Congress candidate Umesh Meti would secure a decisive win in the upcoming Bagalkot Assembly byelection. He emphasized that this contest is vital for reinforcing the party's position across Karnataka, calling it a strategic imperative.
Strategic Importance of Reclaiming the Seat
Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhavan in Belagavi, Jarakiholi stated that while predicting the exact margin of victory would be premature, the party is certain of success. The bypoll was necessitated by the unfortunate death of former minister HY Meti, and reclaiming this seat holds significant importance for the Congress's political strategy in the state.
Jarakiholi warned that both the Bagalkot and Davanagere constituencies are crucial battlegrounds. He stressed that losing either seat would allow the BJP to politically corner the Congress for the next two years, potentially undermining the party's influence and legislative agenda.
Addressing Minority Representation and Leadership Questions
On the topic of minority representation in Davanagere, Jarakiholi acknowledged that the community deserves consideration. However, he explained that the party ultimately decided to field a member of the late Shamanur Shivashankarappa's family, a move aimed at honoring legacy and maintaining local support. He assured that minister SS Mallikarjun would actively safeguard minority interests in the region.
Regarding speculation about a potential change in Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) leadership, Jarakiholi dismissed such talk, stating it is solely the high command's prerogative. He also termed the campaign efforts of expelled BJP leader Basanagouda Patil Yatnal as an internal BJP issue, not a concern for the Congress.
Criticism of Central Government and Commitment to Reservations
Jarakiholi accused the central government of delaying funds under key schemes like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the Jal Jeevan Mission. He highlighted that these delays are adversely affecting rural development works and infrastructure projects in Karnataka.
He reiterated the state government's unwavering commitment to implementing internal reservation policies, emphasizing that this is a priority to ensure equitable representation and social justice within the state's political and administrative frameworks.
The minister's statements underscore the high stakes of the Bagalkot byelection, positioning it as a critical test for Congress's resilience and strategic planning in Karnataka's dynamic political landscape.
