Congress MLC Pradnya Satav Joins BJP in Mumbai, Days Before Maharashtra Civic Polls
Congress MLC Pradnya Satav resigns, joins BJP in Mumbai

In a significant political development ahead of key local body elections, Congress Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) Pradnya Satav switched allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday. The formal induction event took place in Mumbai in the presence of Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan and revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule.

A Swift Political Transition

The move followed a rapid sequence of events where Pradnya Satav first stepped down from her position in the Maharashtra Legislative Council and surrendered her primary membership of the Indian National Congress. Within hours, she was officially welcomed into the BJP fold at a ceremony in the state capital. Her second term as an MLC was slated to continue until the year 2030.

Addressing the media after joining, Satav stated that her decision was influenced by persistent requests from party workers and her dedication to fulfilling the developmental vision of her late husband, Rajeev Satav. Rajeev Satav was a former Congress Rajya Sabha member and considered a close confidant of Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi. He passed away due to Covid-19 complications on May 16, 2021.

"With my late husband's blessings and under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, we will overcome challenges together," she said. She further assured that her team would work based on the principles of inclusivity, development for all, effort for all, and trust for all.

A Prominent Political Family's Journey

The Satav family is a well-known political dynasty from Hingoli in the Marathwada region. Pradnya Satav's mother-in-law, the late Rajani Satav, had served as a Minister of State in Maharashtra. Following her husband's untimely demise, the Congress party nominated Pradnya Satav to the Legislative Council in November 2021. This nomination filled a vacancy created by the death of MLC Sharad Ranpise.

Her exit is viewed as a considerable blow to the Congress party, especially with elections for municipal corporations in Maharashtra scheduled for January 15. The timing underscores the ongoing political realignments in the state.

Congress Reacts with Disappointment and Allegations

The Congress leadership expressed strong reactions to her departure. Maharashtra Congress Committee chief Harshwardhan Sapkal, in a post on social media platform X, conveyed a deep sense of loss, stating, "The people are gripped by the sentiment that Rajeev Satav has died once again today."

Former state Congress president Nana Patole responded to the development, claiming the reasons behind her resignation were unclear. He, however, insinuated that inducements might have played a role. "It's no secret that BJP frequently uses money and positions to attract politicians from other parties. Power has made BJP extremely arrogant," Patole said in Mumbai.

He further added, "Congress's ideology will never fade. Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vow to eliminate Congress, instead of a Congress-free India, we now see a Congress-filled BJP." The defection marks another chapter in the intense political rivalry between the two national parties in Maharashtra.
