Congress MP Counters KTR's Defection Allegations, Points to KCR's Political History
Congress MP from Bhongir, Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, on Thursday strongly refuted claims made by BRS leader KTR that party defections were being orchestrated by Rahul Gandhi. Reddy described KTR's remarks as "misplaced" and suggested that the BRS leader should instead direct his questions to his father, former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), regarding defections at the farmhouse.
Allegations of Political Maneuvering in Telangana
Addressing a press conference in Delhi, Reddy alleged that KCR, after the formation of the new Telangana state, engaged in systematic political maneuvering to eliminate opposition voices. He demonstrated how defections were actively encouraged, with defectors being rewarded with ministerial positions when strategically beneficial for the ruling party.
"The BRS is criticizing the speaker primarily because he is a Dalit and because they disapprove of his decisions," Reddy claimed during his statement. He pointed to specific examples to support his allegations, noting that Talasani Srinivas Yadav, who was elected on the cycle symbol, and Sabitha Indra Reddy, elected on the hand symbol, were both made ministers despite their original party affiliations.
Broken Promises and Dalit Representation
Reddy further accused KCR of breaking significant promises made to the Dalit community in Telangana. He highlighted the unfulfilled commitment to appoint a Dalit as Chief Minister and the failure to allocate three acres of land to Dalits as promised. Additionally, he noted that opposition status was removed from Bhatti Vikramarka, another Dalit leader, further diminishing Dalit representation in state politics.
The Bhongir MP characterized KTR's recent comments as empty rhetoric, accusing him of preaching moral standards while simultaneously focusing his criticism on Rahul Gandhi. "People are neither believing nor voting for KTR," Reddy stated, adding with sarcasm that the BRS leader was now "going to the gym" instead of addressing substantive political issues.
Questioning BRS's Grudge Against the Speaker
Reddy questioned why the BRS maintained such a strong grudge against the speaker, suggesting that KTR should reflect on his own political history before criticizing the Congress party. He noted that BJP leaders in Telangana were actively discussing the speaker's powers, while Union Minister of State for Home, Bandi Sanjay, stated that they would approach the high court regarding the matter.
In his concluding remarks, Reddy asserted that the people of Telangana were fully aware of what he described as an internal agreement between the BJP and BRS. He characterized KTR's recent remarks as embarrassing and lacking in substantive foundation, urging the BRS leader to focus on his own party's historical actions rather than making unfounded allegations against Congress leadership.
The political exchange highlights ongoing tensions in Telangana politics, with accusations of defection politics, broken promises to marginalized communities, and questions about the relationship between major political parties in the state. Reddy's press conference represents a significant counter-narrative to BRS's claims, putting the focus back on KCR's tenure and the treatment of opposition voices during his administration.
