Congress Selects Ketan Bhatikar as Candidate for Ponda Bypoll
In a strategic move ahead of the upcoming byelection, the Congress party has officially recommended former Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) candidate Ketan Bhatikar as its nominee for the Ponda constituency. The byelection is scheduled to take place on April 9, with the results set to be declared on May 4.
Party Approval and Alliance Coordination
The Congress Pradesh Election Committee has cleared Bhatikar's name, and the party is now awaiting formal approval from the Central Election Committee (CEC), which is expected to sign off on the decision on Tuesday. State Congress president Amit Patkar emphasized that the party consulted its alliance partner, the Goa Forward Party (GFP), before finalizing Bhatikar's candidacy, highlighting a collaborative approach to the election.
Local support for Bhatikar appears strong, with party functionary Rajesh Verenkar expressing willingness to back the candidate. Verenkar stated, "The byelection tenure is short and there is no point in us competing among ourselves. I have told the party I will stand by its decision. We have to defeat BJP this time." This unity within the party ranks is seen as crucial for mounting an effective campaign against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Campaign Underway and Political Context
Ketan Bhatikar has already commenced campaigning in the Ponda constituency, which was previously represented by Congress-turned-BJP MLA Ravi Naik. Naik's passing in October 2023 necessitated this byelection, creating a vacancy that both major parties are eager to fill. The constituency has a history of political shifts, making this election a significant battleground.
Patkar expressed confidence in Congress's prospects, noting that the party is focused on consolidating support to challenge the BJP's hold. "We will wait for the CEC to announce it," he said, underscoring the procedural steps while maintaining optimism about the election outcome.
Strategic Implications and Broader Political Landscape
The Ponda byelection is not just a local contest but a reflection of broader political dynamics in Goa. With the BJP having gained ground in recent years, Congress's nomination of Bhatikar—a former MGP candidate—signals an effort to attract diverse voter bases and strengthen opposition unity. The short election timeline adds urgency to campaign efforts, with both parties likely to intensify their outreach in the coming weeks.
As the election date approaches, all eyes will be on Ponda to see if Congress can leverage this nomination to secure a victory and potentially shift the political balance in the region.
