Congress Workers Stage Major Protest in Rohtak Over Social Welfare and Agricultural Concerns
Rohtak witnessed a significant demonstration by Congress party workers on Monday, as they voiced strong opposition against what they described as the discontinuation of old-age pensions, the cancellation of ration cards for economically disadvantaged families, and trade policies perceived as detrimental to farmers. The protestors raised slogans targeting the government and formally submitted a memorandum addressed to the President of India through the local deputy commissioner.
Allegations of Pension Discontinuation and Administrative Hardships
Congress Meham MLA Balram Dangi made serious accusations during the protest, claiming that the BJP-led government had halted pensions for over one lakh beneficiaries, despite official denials that any such stoppages occurred. Dangi elaborated that elderly citizens are now facing immense difficulties, being compelled to make multiple visits to government offices due to these pension cuts, yet their complaints remain unresolved and ignored by authorities.
Claims of Ration Card Cancellations Impacting Food Security
Congress leader Kuldeep KD further alleged that the government engaged in deceptive practices regarding ration cards. He stated that before elections, numerous ration cards were issued, but after assuming power, more than 10 lakh cards were cancelled, stripping poor families of their essential food security. This move, according to KD, has left vulnerable households without access to basic nutritional support, exacerbating poverty and hunger in the region.
Criticism of Trade Policies Affecting Farmers
The protest also highlighted concerns over international trade agreements. Kuldeep KD pointed to a recent trade deal with the United States, warning that its implications would negatively impact Indian farmers. He explained that India has reduced tariffs on agricultural products from the US and opened its markets, which is expected to increase competitive pressure on local soybean and oilseed cultivators, potentially threatening their livelihoods and economic stability.
Broad Participation and Political Support
The demonstration saw extensive involvement from various levels of the Congress party. Key attendees included Meham MLA Balram Dangi, former minister Subhash Batra, and senior leader Chakravarti Sharma. The event also drew participation from Congress urban and rural district presidents, former candidates, block presidents, members of the Youth Congress, and workers from multiple party cells, indicating a unified front against the government's policies.
The protest underscores growing discontent over social welfare measures and agricultural trade strategies, with Congress leaders demanding immediate corrective actions to address the grievances of pensioners, poor families, and farmers in the region.
