Congress Launches Statewide Protests in Telangana, Clashes with BJP Over National Herald Case
Congress Protests in Telangana Lead to Clashes, Arrests

In a major show of strength and protest, the Indian National Congress launched coordinated agitations across Telangana on Thursday, laying siege to Bharatiya Janata Party offices. The statewide protests were called by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) to denounce what the party calls the political harassment of its top leaders, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, in the ongoing National Herald case.

Hyderabad Witnesses Tense Confrontations

The epicenter of the protest was in Hyderabad, where a large contingent of Congress leaders and workers assembled at the party's state headquarters, Gandhi Bhavan. From there, they attempted to march towards the local BJP office, leading to a significant law and order situation. Police officials, declaring the rally unauthorized, moved swiftly to detain the marching leaders. Women leaders were also among those arrested during the attempted march.

Anticipating unrest, the Hyderabad police had made heavy deployments around both Gandhi Bhavan and the BJP office. The situation turned particularly tense in the Nampally area, where supporters from both the Congress and the BJP clashed, raising competing slogans and creating a volatile atmosphere.

Protests Spread to Telangana Districts

The agitation was not confined to the state capital. Congress workers in various districts attempted to replicate the Hyderabad protest, leading to confrontations and police action.

In Karimnagar, party workers tried to lay siege to the office of Union Minister and senior BJP leader, Bandi Sanjay Kumar. This attempt prompted immediate intervention by the local police to prevent any breach of peace.

Similar protests were reported from Sircilla. The tensions escalated notably in Nalgonda, where Congress members were alleged to have thrown eggs at the local BJP office. This act further inflamed passions between the rival party workers.

In Warangal, the protest dynamics took a different turn, with reported clashes not just with BJP workers but also with members of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). This three-way tension resulted in several arrests by the police to control the situation.

Congress Leadership Accuses BJP of Vendetta Politics

Addressing the rally in Hyderabad, which was led by Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president B Mahesh Kumar Goud, the party's national in-charge for the state, Meenakshi Natarajan, launched a scathing attack on the ruling BJP.

Natarajan asserted that the truth would ultimately prevail in the National Herald case and accused the BJP-led central government of deliberately targeting the Gandhi family for political gains. She also criticized the central government's policies, specifically the removal of Mahatma Gandhi's name from the rural employment guarantee scheme, framing it as an insult to the Father of the Nation.

The Congress party's statewide agitation underscores the deepening political rift and the high-voltage campaigning that is setting the stage for the upcoming political battles in Telangana. The protests, while demonstrating the party's mobilization capacity, also highlighted the challenges for law enforcement in maintaining order during politically charged demonstrations.
