Congress Unveils Third Candidate List for Assam Assembly Elections
The Congress party has taken a significant step forward in its electoral preparations by releasing its third list of candidates for the upcoming Assam assembly elections. This latest announcement includes 22 candidates, which brings the party's total declared seats to 87 so far. Alongside its four alliance partners—the AJP, APHLC, CPM, and CPI-ML (Liberation)—the opposition bloc has now announced candidates for a total of 102 seats as of Thursday.
Key Candidates and Strategic Nominations
The third list features several prominent figures within the party. Notably, it includes three working presidents of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee: Pradip Sarkar from Abhayapuri, Jakir Hussain Sikdar from Paka Betbari, and Roselina Tirkey from Khumtai. Additionally, Zubair Anam Mazumder, the president of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress, has been nominated from Algapur Katlichera.
In a move to retain strongholds, Congress has renominated sitting MLA Asif Mohamad Nazar from the Muslim-majority Laharighat seat in central Assam. Nazar was previously at the center of a dispute that led former Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi to leave the party and join the BJP. Another sitting MLA, Abdur Rahim Ahmed of Barpeta, has been fielded from the Muslim-majority Chenga seat in lower Assam.
Former Congress MLAs Ghana Buragohain and Durlav Chamua have also been nominated, from Lakhimpur and Nagaon Batadraba respectively, indicating the party's strategy to leverage experienced leaders.
Unresolved Seats and Alliance Dynamics
Despite these announcements, the party has yet to name candidates for three key seats: Sivasagar, Dhing, and Dalgaon. These seats remain a bone of contention between Congress and Raijor Dal, highlighting ongoing negotiations within the opposition bloc. The alliance with parties like AJP, APHLC, CPM, and CPI-ML (Liberation) underscores a concerted effort to present a united front against the ruling party.
This development comes amid broader political activities, with the opposition aiming to consolidate its position ahead of the elections. The release of multiple candidate lists reflects a phased approach to candidate selection, allowing for strategic adjustments based on local dynamics and alliance discussions.
As the election season heats up, all eyes are on how these nominations will impact voter sentiment and the overall electoral landscape in Assam. The Congress party's focus on renominating sitting MLAs and including key party officials suggests a blend of continuity and renewal in its campaign strategy.
