Congress Leaders Demand Police Action Against BJP's Amit Satam
A political storm has erupted in Mumbai after a delegation of Congress leaders formally approached the city's Police Commissioner, urging the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against BJP's city president, Amit Satam. The complaint alleges that Satam used inflammatory and abusive language targeted at migrant communities residing in the financial capital.
Formal Complaint and Legal Grounds
In a detailed letter to the top police official, Abul Hasan Khan, the Vice-President of the Mumbai Congress, accused the BJP leader of making statements deliberately crafted to create division, foster hatred, and promote enmity among different groups in the city. The Congress has demanded that the police book Amit Satam under Section 153 A, Section 505 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with other relevant legal provisions. These sections typically deal with offences related to promoting enmity between different groups and statements conducing to public mischief.
Protests and Police Detentions
Escalating their protest, Congress party workers took out a march directed at the BJP city president. The demonstration, however, was swiftly met with police action. Law enforcement officials detained several Congress functionaries involved in the protest. Among those detained were the complainant Abul Hasan Khan, along with MRCC secretaries Suresh Shetty and Siraj Rashid Khan, Advocate Satish Shinde, Sunita Gaikwad, Syed Mehdi Rizvi, member Ramesh Kumar Sharma, and Imran Abul Hasan Khan, the former Vice President of the NSUI's Mumbai unit.
The incident highlights the rising political tensions in Mumbai, with opposition parties challenging what they perceive as divisive rhetoric. The ball is now in the court of the Mumbai Police, whose subsequent action regarding the FIR demand is keenly awaited.
