The Congress party secured a sweeping victory in the Guruharsahai Municipal Council elections on Sunday, winning 13 out of 15 wards. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) managed to secure the remaining two wards, while the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failed to win a single seat.
Congress dominates Guruharsahai civic polls
In a major setback for AAP, which controls the state government, the party could not secure any representation in the civic body. Guruharsahai is an assembly segment represented by AAP MLA Fauja Singh Sarari and is home to several senior party functionaries, including District President and Punjab Planning Board Chairman Harjinder Singh Ghangha and BC Commission Chairman Malkeet Singh Thind.
Former Congress MLA Raminder Awla, who led the campaign, said the people had reposed their faith in the Congress. "The people were fed up with erroneous policies and deteriorating law and order situation under the AAP regime, due to which AAP candidates could not even get five percent of votes in their wards," Awla said.
SAD secures two seats in Mamdot Nagar Panchayat
In the Mamdot Nagar Panchayat polls, voting took place for the pending two wards on Sunday. Beantjeet Kaur and Paramjeet Kaur, both from SAD, won in ward numbers 3 and 9 respectively. Out of a total of 13 wards in Mamdot, nine candidates from the ruling AAP and two from SAD had already been elected unopposed on June 28.
The results highlight the growing discontent among voters in the region with the AAP government's performance. The Congress, which had been out of power in the state, has managed to consolidate its base in these local elections.
