Indore: Youth Congress workers, along with those of their students' wing, NSUI, intensified protests on Monday against the rejection of the nomination of the party's sole Rajya Sabha candidate from Madhya Pradesh, Meenakshi Natarajan.
Violence Erupts in Mandsaur
The demonstration turned violent in Mandsaur after a large group of Congress workers attempted to march from the district party office to picket outside the local BJP office. A huge police contingent, comprising personnel from five to six police stations, held off the rally by putting up barricades between Gandhi Chouraha and the Balaji temple.
As protesters tried to scale the barricades and staged a sit-in on the road, an hour-long standoff with the police ensued. The police deployed water cannons and resorted to a mild lathi charge, resulting in minor injuries to two or three workers. About a dozen student leaders were also detained for organising the protest without permission from the police administration.
Political Reactions
Mandsaur Congress district president Mahendra Singh Gujjar condemned the police action, claiming that the protesting students were marching peacefully. City SP Jitendra Bhaskar contested the claim of a peaceful protest, saying water cannons had to be deployed to enforce order.
Protest in Indore
In Indore, Youth Congress workers led by their city president Amit Patel marched to the Collectorate. However, instead of staging a protest, they submitted a memorandum addressed to the President.
