Sarkaghat Court Sends Murder Accident to Police Custody Amid Political Uproar
The Sarkaghat court on Tuesday ordered police custody for Vikas Patiyal, the accused in the brutal murder of 19-year-old college student Sia Guleria, until April 16. This decision comes as the shocking killing has ignited a significant political controversy across Himachal Pradesh, with leaders from both the ruling party and opposition engaging in heated exchanges over law and order in the state.
Details of the Tragic Incident
According to police reports, the alleged attack occurred on Monday in the Gopalpur area of Sarkaghat. The victim, Sia Guleria, was on her way to college when she was assaulted with a sharp-edged weapon, leading to her immediate death at the scene. Investigators revealed that the accused hails from the same village as the victim and is suspected to be a drug addict, adding a concerning dimension to the case.
Authorities are currently probing the motive behind this heinous crime, with crucial evidence such as call detail records and forensic reports still awaited. Following the court's order, the accused was taken for a mandatory medical examination as part of the ongoing investigation process.
Chief Minister's Assurance and Opposition's Criticism
Chief Minister Sukhu addressed the media on Tuesday, asserting that women remain safe in Himachal Pradesh and promising strict action in this case. "A daughter of ours was brutally murdered. We ensured the immediate arrest of the accused," he stated, emphasizing that he had directed the Director General of Police to conduct a thorough and comprehensive probe. "We will ensure the strictest possible punishment through the court," Sukhu added.
He noted that preliminary inputs suggest the accused may have been a drug addict, but assured that all angles would be thoroughly investigated. "No one has the right to take a life… we will get to the bottom of the case," he declared, cautioning against viewing isolated incidents as a reflection of the overall safety situation in the state.
In response, Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur strongly criticized the incident, labeling it a sign of "deteriorating law and order" under the current administration. Describing the murder as "deeply disturbing," he argued that the brutality had shaken public conscience and demanded a time-bound investigation to deliver swift justice.
Political Fallout and Public Protests
Thakur, who personally met the victim's family, expressed that their grief was "indescribable" and stressed the necessity of examining any potential wider conspiracy. Linking the crime to rising drug abuse in the region, he cited alarming statistics, including over 6,200 drug-related cases and 66 overdose deaths in recent years. He also flagged a concerning increase in crimes against women, accusing the government of administrative failure and a lack of sensitivity in addressing these critical issues.
"Urgent steps are needed to restore public confidence and ensure women's safety," Thakur emphasized, calling for immediate action from the state authorities.
Chief Minister Sukhu, however, rejected allegations of weak enforcement, arguing that the prompt arrest of the accused sent a strong message about the government's commitment to justice. He accused the opposition of attempting to politicize a sensitive and tragic issue, rather than focusing on collaborative solutions.
Community Response and Final Rites
Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh also met with the victim's family, offering condolences and assuring them that justice would be served. Meanwhile, protests erupted in Sarkaghat, with demonstrators demanding strict action against the perpetrator and a broader crackdown on drug-related activities. Student groups and various social organizations actively participated in these rallies, highlighting growing public concern over safety and substance abuse.
The victim, Sia Guleria, was cremated in her native village on Tuesday, marking a somber end to a life cut tragically short. The case continues to unfold, with authorities under pressure to deliver a transparent and expedited investigation amid mounting political and public scrutiny.
