Political Violence Erupts in Kannur as CPI(M) Rebel Supporter's House Targeted
In a disturbing incident of post-election violence, a house belonging to a supporter of a CPI(M) rebel candidate was attacked in Payyannur, Kannur district, with a car parked on the premises set ablaze. Police confirmed the attack on Friday, registering a case and launching a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
Details of the Attack and Victim Profile
The targeted house belongs to T Purushothaman, a resident of Mavicheri in Payyannur. According to police reports, unidentified persons carried out the attack in the early hours of Friday morning. The First Information Report (FIR) states that the incident occurred around 12:30 am when the assailants allegedly trespassed into the house compound, set fire to a car parked there, and smashed window panes by pelting stones.
Purushothaman is identified as a staunch supporter of V Kunhikrishnan, a former CPI(M) member who defected from the party after levelling corruption allegations against party leaders. Kunhikrishnan is currently contesting as an Independent candidate with United Democratic Front (UDF) support in the Payyannur constituency. Police revealed that Purushothaman himself was formerly a CPI(M) member but had left the party several years ago.
Political Allegations and Investigation Progress
The complainant has directly alleged the involvement of CPI(M) workers in the attack, according to police statements. This incident follows the conclusion of polling on Thursday evening, which saw multiple reports of alleged attacks by CPI(M) activists on Congress and BJP workers across several constituencies in Kannur district, including Payyannur, Taliparamba, Mattannur, and Dharmadam.
Police authorities are examining CCTV footage from the area as part of their ongoing investigation. The attack represents a serious escalation of political tensions in the region, highlighting the volatile atmosphere following the recent elections.
Broader Context of Political Violence in Kannur
Kannur district has a long history of political violence between rival factions, particularly involving the CPI(M) and other political parties. This latest incident underscores the persistent challenges in maintaining political peace in the region, especially during and after election periods.
The attack on Purushothaman's property raises concerns about:
- The safety of political dissidents and their supporters
- The potential for retaliatory violence between political groups
- The effectiveness of law enforcement in preventing such incidents
- The impact on democratic processes and freedom of political expression
As the investigation continues, authorities face mounting pressure to identify and apprehend the perpetrators while preventing further escalation of violence in the politically sensitive district of Kannur.
