CPI Leader Accuses Political Forces of Stirring Kerala Interfaith Marriage Controversy
In a significant development from Thiruvananthapuram, CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam asserted on Saturday that the ongoing controversy surrounding the marriage of a young woman, who gained attention during the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela and later married her Muslim friend at a Kerala temple, is driven by political motives. This statement comes as the case has sparked national debate, with investigations launched in Madhya Pradesh following claims that the woman, Monalisa, was only 16 years old at the time of her wedding.
Investigation and Political Backlash
Last month, after the wedding ceremony, Left leaders met the couple and hailed it as the "real Kerala Story," emphasizing its significance in the state's social fabric. However, Viswam clarified that the marriage was legally approved based on the Aadhaar card presented to authorities, urging that any new information should be thoroughly investigated without bias.
When questioned about the allegations of the girl being underage, Viswam responded firmly, "There is politics behind all this. You may forget it, but we will not." He elaborated that the controversy is being exploited to create divisions and distract from larger issues, particularly targeting the BJP's involvement.
Allegations Against BJP and Election Dynamics
Viswam further escalated his criticism by alleging that the BJP channels black money during elections across India with corporate support. "There is nothing different here either. BJP has contested several elections here, and this time will be no different," he stated, linking the marriage controversy to broader electoral strategies.
He expressed confidence in the political prospects of the CPI and the Left Democratic Front (LDF), predicting that both would emerge victorious in upcoming elections, with the CPI securing more seats. This assertion underscores the high stakes in Kerala's political landscape, where interfaith and social issues often intersect with electoral battles.
Context and Implications
The case has drawn attention due to its cross-state nature, involving individuals from Prayagraj and Kerala, and highlights ongoing tensions around interfaith marriages in India. Viswam's comments reflect a broader narrative within leftist politics, positioning such incidents as tools for political maneuvering by opponents.
As investigations proceed, the focus remains on verifying the age claims and ensuring legal compliance, while political leaders like Viswam continue to frame the discourse around electoral motives and social harmony.
