CPM's Govindan Claims BJP Gains in Kerala Would Come at Congress's Expense
CPM: BJP Kerala Wins Would Cut Into Congress Vote Base

CPM Leader Asserts BJP's Kerala Success Would Depend on Congress Vote Erosion

In a significant political statement, CPM state secretary M V Govindan declared on Tuesday that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) manages to secure any assembly seat in Kerala, it would be solely at the expense of the Congress party. Addressing a news conference in Thrissur, Govindan emphasized that the BJP's previous electoral victories, such as the Nemom assembly seat and the Thrissur parliament seat, were achieved by cutting into the traditional vote base of the Congress.

Allegations and Counter-Allegations in Sabarimala Gold Theft Case

When questioned about the possibility of Congress supporting the BJP in certain constituencies, Govindan stated that such dynamics would only become clear after the elections. He also countered charges made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who accused CPM leaders of involvement in the Sabarimala gold theft case. Govindan alleged that it was AICC general secretary K C Venugopal who first introduced the controversial figure Unnikrishnan Potti to Sabarimala during his tenure as devaswom minister.

Furthermore, Govindan claimed that UDF convenor Adoor Prakash and MP Anto Antony had taken Potti and Bellary-based gold dealer Govardhan to the residence of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on multiple occasions. He demanded that Rahul Gandhi explain the true purpose of these visits, adding a layer of intrigue to the ongoing political discourse.

CPM's Stance on SDPI and Electoral Alliances

Govindan clarified that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has no formal alliance with the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI). However, he did not rule out the possibility of accepting votes from the SDPI. In a pointed remark, he said, "Let Congress first say they will not accept the votes of Jamaat-e-Islami, then we will answer the question as to whether we will accept the votes of SDPI." This statement highlights the complex electoral strategies at play in Kerala's political landscape.

Brinda Karat Criticizes Rahul Gandhi's Campaign Tactics

Meanwhile, CPM politburo member Brinda Karat commented on Rahul Gandhi's election campaign, describing his focus on the Sabarimala issue as a 'self-goal.' She argued that instead of questioning who stole gold from Sabarimala, Rahul should have inquired about who took Potti to Sonia Gandhi. Karat's remarks underscore the intense political rivalry and the strategic missteps being highlighted by opposing parties in the run-up to the elections.

This series of allegations and counter-allegations reflects the heightened tensions and competitive dynamics in Kerala politics, with key leaders from CPM, Congress, and BJP engaging in a war of words over electoral strategies and past controversies.
