In a dramatic political development that has sent shockwaves through Kerala's political landscape, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has reportedly decided to drop sitting MLA and former minister M M Mani from contesting the upcoming assembly elections. The party's state secretariat has revised the candidate list submitted by the Idukki district leadership, replacing Mani's name with that of former MLA K K Jayachandran for the crucial Udumbanchola constituency.
District Recommendation Overruled by State Leadership
The Idukki district secretariat had strongly recommended that M M Mani be fielded once again from Udumbanchola, a constituency that has remained a CPM stronghold for nearly twenty-five years. This recommendation had fueled intense speculation that the veteran leader would secure another term as the party's candidate. However, after extensive deliberations at the state level, the leadership has opted for a different strategy, choosing to give the opportunity to Jayachandran instead.
K K Jayachandran, who currently serves as a state secretariat member and has previously won three consecutive terms as MLA, will have his candidature officially announced once it receives formal approval from both the Idukki district secretariat and the district committee. In the recent local body elections, the UDF managed to capture five panchayats, including Rajakkad, which it regained after twenty-seven years of Left control. Meanwhile, M M Mani addressed the media on Monday, stating that he was unaware of any party decision to replace him in the Udumbanchola constituency. The veteran leader maintained that he has no objection if the party decides otherwise and emphasized that it is entirely up to the party leadership to determine whether he will be in the electoral fray.
"I am hearing all this from you. Let the party decide everything," Mani stated, indicating his acceptance of whatever decision the party hierarchy makes. He also firmly dismissed speculation that health issues might be a reason for his potential exclusion from contesting, clarifying that he has not informed the party of any such concerns.
"Jayachandran and some other party leaders have diabetes. I have it too. That is not a health issue serious enough to prevent me from contesting," Mani added, putting to rest rumors about his physical condition affecting his political prospects.
