An 80-year-old Dalit woman allegedly attempted self-immolation along with her four grandchildren on the premises of the Kargahar block office in Rohtas district on Thursday, accusing authorities of inaction on her repeated pleas for financial assistance. The incident took place in Sasaram, the district headquarters, and highlighted the desperate plight of the elderly woman who has been struggling to support her family after the death of her son and daughter-in-law.
Details of the Incident
The woman, identified as Suhagini Kunwar, a resident of Amwalia village in Rohtas, set her saree on fire and tried to carry her grandchildren into the flames. Locals present at the spot immediately intervened and rescued all five individuals, preventing what could have been a tragic loss of life. Eyewitnesses alleged that the incident unfolded in front of block officials and police personnel, but immediate intervention from authorities was not forthcoming. Some onlookers were also seen recording videos of the incident, they claimed.
Background of the Family
Kunwar stated that her son and daughter-in-law died about two-and-a-half years ago, leaving behind four children — Tappu Musahar (8 years old), Amarjeet Musahar (6 years old), Preeti Kumari (4 years old), and one-and-a-half-year-old Pratima Kumari. Since then, she has been raising them amid severe financial hardship. The family has been struggling for basic sustenance, and the children often go without adequate food, she added.
Allegations Against Authorities
Kunwar alleged that despite multiple visits to block and district offices, her applications under the Kabir Antyeshti and Parivarik Labh schemes remained pending. She further claimed that even funeral assistance was not provided after the deaths of her son and daughter-in-law. According to her, she had submitted a written notice to the Block Development Officer (BDO) on April 3, warning of extreme action if her grievances were not addressed. The authorities, however, did not respond to her pleas, leading to the drastic step.
Response from Officials
Block Development Officer Ajit Kumar said the matter was old and assured that payments under the pending schemes would be processed after verification of records. He attributed the delay to pending reports and stated that the necessary steps would be taken to ensure that the benefits reach the family. The incident has sparked outrage among local residents and activists, who have demanded swift action against the officials responsible for the delay.
The local administration has assured a thorough investigation into the matter and promised to provide immediate relief to the family. The elderly woman and her grandchildren are currently receiving medical care and counseling.
