The deteriorating condition of the road connecting Silchar town to Assam University has triggered widespread resentment among students, teachers, commuters, and local residents. The worst-affected area is the Silcoorie stretch, where the road has become heavily damaged and nearly unmotorable due to numerous potholes that have remained unattended for a long time. The situation has worsened significantly during the monsoon season, making travel hazardous.
Daily commuters face immense hardship
Thousands of students, university employees, and local residents rely on this road daily for their commute. The stretch from Silcoorie post office to Silcoorie camp has become particularly dangerous, with vehicles forced to navigate around deep craters and uneven surfaces. Commuters have reported frequent breakdowns and accidents, adding to their frustration.
Authorities accused of negligence
Locals alleged that despite repeated appeals and complaints to the authorities, no effective measures have been taken to repair the road. They demanded immediate intervention from the district administration and public representatives. Residents also questioned how the poor condition of the road had allegedly escaped the attention of Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya, who is said to frequently use this route while traveling to his residence at Irongmara near the university.
The prolonged neglect has sparked anger among the community, with many calling for accountability. Students have voiced concerns over their safety and the inconvenience caused by the damaged road, which affects their daily academic routines. University employees have also expressed dismay, highlighting the impact on their punctuality and work efficiency.
As the monsoon continues, the road condition is expected to deteriorate further, prompting urgent calls for action. Residents have urged the authorities to prioritize the repair work and ensure a safe and smooth commuting experience for all.
