Dehradun Residents Stage Protest Over Highway Construction and Flooding Concerns

Residents of Chandrabani and neighboring localities, including Choyla and Pattiyonwala, organized a protest on Sunday morning to voice their opposition to the ongoing construction of the Asharodi-Jhajhra four-lane highway. The demonstrators allege that the project has significantly altered the natural water flow, exacerbating the risk of flooding in residential areas.

Drainage Issues and Flooding Risks

The primary grievance centers on the improper placement of drainage outlets, which residents claim are diverting water flow directly toward residential zones like Chandrabani. Former area councillor Sukhbir Butola explained, "Every year during the monsoon season, we experience severe waterlogging. The new highway has interfered with the natural drainage patterns and is now channeling even more runoff toward our homes." This has raised serious concerns about increased flood damage during heavy rains.

Demands for Infrastructure Improvements

Protesters are calling on the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to implement a comprehensive and effective drainage system to prevent floodwaters from infiltrating residential properties. In response to the demonstration, construction activities were temporarily halted, highlighting the urgency of the issue.

Disruption of Vital Transportation Links

Beyond flooding, residents highlighted another critical problem: the highway project has obstructed a crucial link road connecting Pattiyonwala to Gharat via Bajwala. This route has served as a primary transportation artery for the past five decades. Poonam Bhatnagar, a local resident, expressed frustration, stating, "This road is used daily by thousands of villagers from both Dharampur and Sahaspur Assembly constituencies. Despite numerous appeals to local elected representatives, authorities have failed to provide alternative arrangements for vehicular and pedestrian movement. How much longer must we endure this inconvenience?"

Environmental Concerns and Public Outrage

The highway project has previously faced scrutiny due to environmental impacts. Earlier this year, an RTI (Right to Information) disclosure revealed that 6,574 trees are being felled to make way for the highway. Videos documenting the tree stumps left behind after the felling operations sparked widespread public outrage, adding to the community's discontent with the project's execution.

Official Response and Project Timeline

Senior NHAI officials have responded to the concerns by asserting that the project design includes all necessary drainage outlets and culverts. They have assured residents that any water diversion issues will be addressed as construction progresses. The Asharodi-Jhajhra four-lane highway is currently scheduled for completion by mid-2027, but ongoing protests and community demands may influence future adjustments to the plan.
