Dharwad Leader Intensifies Demand for Separate Municipal Corporation

Manoj Patil, the president of the Agitation Committee for Separate Dharwad Municipal Corporation, has issued a strong appeal to the state government. He is urging authorities to secure the Governor's assent for the Bill that proposes a separate municipal corporation for Dharwad and to issue an official government notification without further delay.

Six-Year Struggle for Autonomy

Addressing a press conference in Dharwad on Thursday, Patil highlighted that the demand for a separate municipal corporation has been a persistent issue for the past six years. "All political parties have extended their support to this demand," he stated, emphasizing the broad-based consensus. During the Belagavi legislative session, the state government tabled the separate municipal corporation bill, which was passed unanimously by the assembly. The bill was subsequently forwarded to the Governor for formal assent.

Delays and Allegations of Political Interference

Patil expressed frustration over the prolonged delay, noting that several months have passed since the bill was sent, yet the Governor's consent remains pending. He further alleged that misleading rumours are being circulated regarding the formation of the separate corporation. Politically motivated attempts are being made to oppose this move, he claimed, pointing to vested interests that seek to derail the process.

Financial Concerns and Opposition

A significant concern raised by Patil involves financial implications. Reports indicate that since the finance commission allocates higher grants to larger municipal corporations, all members of the existing unified corporation have passed a resolution advocating for its continuation rather than creating a separate entity for Dharwad. Patil warned that such moves could undermine the autonomy and development of Dharwad. The committee strongly opposes these efforts and cautions against any attempts to delay the implementation, he asserted.

Appeal to State and Union Leaders

In a direct appeal, Patil called upon Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi to resist pressures from opposing factions. He urged them to ensure that the separate municipal corporation for Dharwad is implemented promptly, without yielding to external influences. This step is crucial for the region's administrative efficiency and growth, he emphasized, underscoring the urgency of the matter.
