BJP's Dilip Ghosh Exudes Confidence in Kharagpur Sadar Victory, Predicts TMC Exit

In a bold declaration ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections, BJP candidate from Kharagpur Sadar, Dilip Ghosh, has expressed unwavering confidence in his party's victory, asserting that the ruling Trinamool Congress's "departure is ensured." Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Ghosh emphasized that the political landscape is shifting decisively.

Ghosh's Direct Challenge to TMC Leadership

"The time has come for TMC to go... Now Mamata Banerjee has nothing in her hands. Their departure is ensured," Ghosh stated firmly. He elaborated that the deployment of central forces at polling booths has reassured voters, enabling them to exercise their franchise without fear of intimidation from TMC supporters.

"If the booths come under the control of central forces, people will go to vote without worry because here the police, along with the goons, intimidate people," he explained, highlighting a critical issue in the electoral process.

Kharagpur Sadar: A Constituency at a Crossroads

Dilip Ghosh is aiming to replicate his 2016 success in the Kharagpur Sadar assembly constituency, where he faces Trinamool Congress candidate Pradip Sarkar. Sarkar, who lost in 2021, is seeking a comeback, making this a highly contested battle.

The constituency, with an estimated population of 4 lakh and nearly 1.9 lakh voters, is grappling with persistent challenges:

  • Severe pollution issues
  • Chronic water crisis
  • High youth unemployment rates

Assembly constituency number 224 comprises the Kharagpur Railway settlement, Kharagpur I community development block, and Kharagpur municipality. Residents are hopeful for a leader who will ensure continuity in developmental works and address these pressing concerns.

Diverse Demographics and Political History

Historically a railway junction, Kharagpur Sadar hosts a diverse population from across India, including significant communities of Telugu, Marathi, and Tamil speakers, who nearly outnumber local Bengalis. This multicultural fabric adds complexity to the electoral dynamics.

Dilip Ghosh, who lost his 2024 Lok Sabha bid, is seeking to regain political ground by repeating his 2016 performance. In that election, he broke the streak of seven-time Congress MLA Gyan Singh Sohanpal. After winning the MLA seat, Ghosh vacated it following his election to the Lok Sabha in 2019.

A subsequent bypoll saw All India Trinamool Congress candidate Pradip Sarkar defeat BJP's Prem Chandra Jha. However, this victory was short-lived, as BJP's Hiramoy Chattopadhyay reclaimed the seat in 2021. Chattopadhyay is now contesting from the Shyampur constituency, while Congress has fielded Papiya Chakraborty in Kharagpur Sadar.

West Bengal's High-Stakes Electoral Battle

The upcoming elections follow the 2021 assembly polls, where TMC secured a landslide victory with 213 seats. Despite this, BJP's remarkable growth from a minor player to winning 77 seats in the last cycle has set the stage for a fierce confrontation.

West Bengal is scheduled for two phases of assembly polls on April 23 and April 29, with results announced on May 4. The political atmosphere is charged, with both major parties vying for dominance in this crucial eastern state.

As Dilip Ghosh campaigns vigorously, his confidence reflects the BJP's broader strategy to challenge TMC's stronghold, focusing on issues of governance, security, and development to sway the electorate in Kharagpur Sadar and beyond.
