DMK Finalizes Seat Sharing with DMDK and VCK for Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections
In a significant political development, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Tuesday announced the allocation of 10 seats to the Desiya Murpoku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and eight seats to the Viduthalai Chiruthalaigal Katchi (VCK) for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections. This move marks the first-time alliance between DMK and DMDK, with DMDK receiving the second-highest number of seats in the DMK-led front after the Congress party.
Details of the Seat Allocation Agreement
VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan and DMDK general secretary Premallatha Vijayakant met with Chief Minister M K Stalin to formalize the seat-sharing pact. Thirumavalavan expressed satisfaction with the eight seats allotted to VCK, which includes six reserved constituencies and two general segments, representing an increase of two seats compared to the previous election. Meanwhile, Premallatha projected confidence, stating that the DMK alliance would secure 200 seats, ensuring Stalin's re-election as chief minister.
Surprise and Strategic Adjustments in Seat Distribution
The allotment of 10 seats to DMDK came as a surprise to many political observers. Premallatha revealed that DMDK had initially demanded more seats but had to make sacrifices to accommodate other allies within the coalition. She submitted a list of 25 preferred constituencies to DMK, from which 10 will be shortlisted and finalized by Friday. This strategic adjustment highlights the complex negotiations involved in forming a cohesive electoral front.
Political Objectives and Broader Alliance Dynamics
Thirumavalavan emphasized that VCK's primary goal is to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies, focusing on resisting caste-based and communal forces for the welfare of Tamil Nadu and India. He clarified that the 18 seats allotted to VCK and the two left parties (CPM and CPI) form a collective unit for left democratic forces, and any demand for a Rajya Sabha seat is not tied to this election cycle.
Overall Alliance Seat Distribution and Symbol Usage
So far, DMK has allocated a total of 66 seats to its alliance partners. The Congress party leads with 28 seats, followed by five each for CPM and CPI, four for MDMK, and two each for IUML, Manidhaneya Makkal Katchi, and Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi. Out of these 66 seats, alliance parties will contest 59 under their own symbols, while in the remaining 175 constituencies, DMK and its minor allies will use the 'rising sun' symbol. This represents a reduction of 13 segments for DMK compared to the 2021 election, due to the inclusion of several new parties in the alliance.
