DMK Reduces Seat Allocation to MDMK for Upcoming Assembly Elections

In a significant political development, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has allotted four seats to its ally, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), for the upcoming assembly elections in Tamil Nadu. This allocation marks a reduction of two seats compared to the previous election cycle in 2021, where MDMK contested six seats.

Symbol Strategy and High-Level Committee Decision

Under the new agreement, MDMK will contest three of these seats using DMK's iconic 'rising sun' symbol. However, in a strategic shift, the party will field a candidate on its own independent symbol for one seat. This decision was formalized during a high-level committee meeting held at the MDMK headquarters in Chennai on Wednesday.

The meeting was attended by key party figures, including general secretary Vaiko and principal secretary Durai Vaiko. Shortly after the deliberations, Vaiko proceeded to sign the seat-sharing agreement with Chief Minister M K Stalin at the DMK headquarters, solidifying the alliance's electoral strategy.

Compliance with Election Commission Regulations

The move to contest one seat on an independent symbol is primarily driven by regulatory concerns. In the 2021 elections, MDMK contested all six allotted seats on the 'rising sun' symbol, securing victories in four. However, recent actions by the Election Commission of India (ECI) have prompted a change in approach.

An MDMK functionary explained, "Last year, the ECI issued notices to several political parties that did not contest on their own symbols, questioning why their registrations should not be cancelled. To preempt any such disciplinary action, we have decided to contest a single seat on our own symbol." This concern was also evident during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where DMK preferred MDMK to use the 'rising sun' symbol, but Durai Vaiko insisted on an independent symbol.

Seat Negotiations and Alliance Objectives

Initially, MDMK had sought a higher number of seats than its 2021 allocation. The party scaled back its demand to five seats but ultimately settled for four. A senior MDMK leader emphasized the alliance's broader goal, stating, "Our primary objective is to defeat the BJP and its allies in this election, not to create discord within the alliance."

Additionally, MDMK had expressed interest in securing a Rajya Sabha seat but relinquished this demand as part of the negotiations, highlighting a focus on unity and electoral success over individual party gains.

Historical Context and Electoral Performance

In the 2021 assembly elections, MDMK's performance on the 'rising sun' symbol was notable, with four wins out of six contested seats. The current adjustment in strategy reflects both regulatory pressures and a pragmatic approach to maintaining a strong coalition against common political adversaries.

This seat-sharing agreement underscores the evolving dynamics within Tamil Nadu's political landscape, as parties navigate electoral rules while striving for collaborative victories.
