DMK Tightens Grip on Chennai, Limits Ally Access in Seat Allocation
In a decisive move underscoring its dominance, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has firmly controlled its electoral fortress in Chennai, ceding merely one seat out of the 16 core city constituencies to an alliance partner. This strategic allocation sets the stage for intense direct contests, with the DMK and the main opposition AIADMK poised to lock horns in 12 of these key battlegrounds.
Strategic Rejig Infuses Fresh Blood into DMK Roster
As part of a calculated reshuffle aimed at injecting new energy and vocal representation, the DMK has replaced at least six sitting MLAs with younger or more assertive candidates. A notable inclusion is A P Poornima, a first-time Greater Chennai Corporation councillor, who has been fielded in Ambattur, marking a significant promotion within the party ranks.
Surprise exclusions from the candidate list include T Nagar's J Karunanidhi and Egmore's I Paranthamen, signaling a shift in the party's approach to these constituencies. In a strategic placement, DMK's Chennai West district secretary N Chitrarasu has been nominated to replace sitting MLA Mohan in Anna Nagar, while Mohan's son, Karthik Mohan, will contest from Villivakkam against TVK's Adhav Arjuna.
Key Contests and Notable Absences in Core City Seats
Highlighting its intent to challenge rivals aggressively, the DMK has fielded its own candidate, R D Sekar, in Perambur, where TVK chief Vijay is anticipated to make his electoral debut. Meanwhile, Villivakkam MLA Vetri Azhagan, grandson of the late DMK general secretary K Anbazhagan, has opted not to seek renomination, adding to the dynamic changes in the lineup.
Chief Minister M K Stalin will contest from Kolathur for the fourth consecutive time, and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin will seek re-election from Chepauk-Triplicane for the second time. This sets a high-stakes scenario, placing pressure on the AIADMK to select its strongest candidates for the upcoming electoral race.
Incumbent Retentions and New Faces in DMK's Chennai Strategy
As anticipated, several incumbent MLAs have been retained, including:
- Ma Subramanian, DMK Chennai south secretary, contesting from Saidapet
- P K Sekarbabu, Chennai North (West) Secretary, retaining Harbour
- Prabakar Raja from Virugambakkam
- Dr Ezhilan from Thousand Lights
- J J Ebenezer from R K Nagar
- S Aravind Ramesh from Sholinganallur
- Dha Velu from Mylapore
Adding legal expertise to the roster, two lawyers—Tamilan Prasanna in Egmore and K S Ravichandran in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar—have secured nominations in the core city constituencies, reflecting the party's diverse candidate selection.
Suburban Sees Consistency with Minor Adjustments
In the immediate suburbs, the DMK has maintained stability by retaining most of its candidates, such as:
- Minorities Minister S M Nasar for Avadi
- MSME Minister T M Anbarasan for Alandur
- A Krishnasamy for Poonamallee
- Ganapathy for Maduravoyal
- S Sudharsanam for Madhavaram
Ambattur stands out as the sole exception in this region, with the ticket awarded to first-time councillor Poornima. Notably, she is the only woman candidate in the DMK's list for Chennai and its surrounding areas, highlighting a gender gap in representation that the party may need to address in future elections.
This comprehensive seat allocation strategy underscores the DMK's focused approach to consolidating its hold in Chennai while strategically managing alliance dynamics and introducing fresh faces to energize its electoral prospects.
